Generally speaking humans enjoy a drink with their food, and it’s often because of this we give the same option to our cats. However, how often do you find your cat drinking from running taps?

In the wild, cats would source their own food and water as and when, from wherever they can find it and you can guarantee they would never have food and water together.

For domestic cats, having their food and water bowls together is very confusing and cats will often class this source of water as unsuitable. Cats do not like their water to be contaminated and there is a high risk of this if it is placed next to food; cats are quite messy eaters! This is often what leads to cats perching over the sink every time you wash up or fill the kettle as they know they can access clean, fresh water.

If your cat goes outside they will normally find a regular drinking spot, but it does have risks as this may be a pond or water butt and indoor cats may not drink enough which can lead to problems later in life.

It’s important to encourage your cat to drink at home, whether an indoor or outdoor lifestyle. Here are our top tips:

  • Place their water bowl away from the food, in another room if possible
  • Ensure the water is replaced regularly
  • Have more than one water source around the home
  • Use ceramic bowls only
  • In the warm weather, place ice cubes in the water to help cool your cat down
  • If your cat likes the running water, a cat water fountain is a great option

Small and simple changes make the biggest difference and help to keep your cat hydrated and healthy.
