Something we get asked a lot is “why does my cat rub against the furniture?”.

When cats are happy and contented, they produce pheromones from their cheeks. These pheromones are one of the ways cats mark their territory so each time your cat rubs its cheeks against your legs, the table, chair legs etc it is because they’re marking it as theirs.

If you have more than one cat you will notice each cat rubs on different things so that they both have their own territory and safe place within the home.

At Cat’s Whiskers, we use Feliway plug ins throughout the clinic. Feliway works by producing a natural equivalent to a cat’s pheromones which helps them to feel safe, so in turn it helps them to relax more when they are with us.

Feliway should be used at home as a way to help cats feel secure, particularly when there are changes at home, if you are likely to be out of the house for a few days or more, and if there are cats living together that don’t get along.
