Meow

Probably the most recognised cat behaviour! It is thought the more we talk to our cats, the more they talk back. Cats may talk with a little purr or chirp, a simple meow, or if they are scared they may hiss or growl.

Purring

A sound taught by their mother, cats purr when they feel safe, happy, but also when they are unwell or scared.

Kneading

Another behaviour learnt at a very young age, when feeding from their mother cats use alternate paws against the Queen’s body to increase milk flow.

As kittens go to new homes and become cats, the trait of kneading stays with them. Cats who knead on their owners laps or chest are content and feel secure, just as they did as a kitten.

Mad Moments

In the wild the majority of a cat’s day would be stalking and hunting prey, when they’re not sleeping of course. For our indoor cats, they don’t use up this energy which is what results in these so called ‘mad moments’. Launching across the room, running around the house with dilated pupils, and a flicking tail is just your cat’s way of using up excess energy!

Rolling

A cat will roll onto their back to show off their belly for two main reasons; a sign of trust, or they want to play. A bit of a mixed message for humans as it will often end in an accidental scratch, bite or injury.
