Did you know that your cat is classed as a senior when they reach 8 years old?

It’s never something we want to think about, but this is a time when signs of ageing conditions can begin to show. 8 cat years is equivalent to 48 human years, which is around the age we start going for routine tests and screenings ourselves.

For cats it’s important that we start routine screening early too. By having a routine screen when your cat turns 8, it means we have a profile of your cat’s blood and urine, as well as a baseline for their blood pressure. This means we can be sure what is ‘normal’ for your cat, and by regular checks each year, we can then detect any changes that may be affecting your cat.

What do we test?

Blood and urine tests are there to screen for liver and kidney diseases, and diabetes. Blood tests also check for hyperthyroidism and to assess red and white blood cells, as well as other important blood components which may be an indication of disease. A blood pressure check is used to diagnose high blood pressure, which is a common problem in older cats and may not display any symptoms.
