Cat’s Whiskers Veterinary Clinic’s cat care tips

1. Provide plenty of human companionship – cats are often thought of as being independent but the more you get to know cats the more you come to realise they really do rely on you for mental stimulation and affection.

2. Play: Kittens and young cats are very playful. Give them an assortment of toys to keep them occupied and exercised – these need not be expensive – every kitten loves a cardboard box to play in. Play is also a good way for you to get to know and trust each other. Providing your cat with a scratching post allows them to enjoy the natural scratching behaviour without damaging your furniture!

3. Other equally important points to remember:

  • Provide regular, suitable meals with a constant supply of fresh water
  • Provide a clean and comfortable bed
  • Provide your cat with outdoor access or be prepared to empty and clean a litter tray on a daily basis
  • Groom your cat regularly (long-haired cats require daily grooming)
  • Have him or her neutered between 4 and 6 months old
  • Vaccinate against the major feline diseases regularly
  • De-worm regularly and provide treatment for fleas
  • Bring your cat to see our vet when he or she shows any sign of illness – pet insurance can help offset the cost of veterinary treatment.
